Personal Statement

I believe that being an artist is about seeing and interacting with the world in a certain way that others may not grasp. My work is about just that – the world and the people around us. My photographs pay homage to the people I meet and places I see during my journey though life. I look for aesthetic beauty where others may overlook it – I think people often fail to notice the so-called mundane, instead acknowledging only more profound situations, but I feel this is a wrong way to go about things – aesthetic quality is inherent in most things, and I want people to realise that. I am not interested in shocking the world, or stirring up controversy, rather the pinpoint of my work is focused on understanding the world around us, free of the pretence that is becoming a staple part of today’s art world.
I feel there is far too much ‘fake’ fashion photography out there. Fashion is a major part of what I am interested in – although certainly not everything. The aesthetic I wish to create is based on reality – I am aiming for a high level of sensitivity with all of my work, in particular my fashion photography. Though maintaining close relationships with all my models and subjects I aim to bridge the gap between fashion and sentimentality, art and documentary. My use of camera and image selection is my way of connection and reaching out to the subject, changing it with my own presence. The final product then, is a physical representation of the process of connection and influence that happens between myself, my eyes, and my subject.
